GREEN are you?

I don’t think we’re ever really green enough. And I don’t mean green like the Hulk or Kermit the Frog. I mean, like the latest craze, “environment” green. A lot of people think that means driving a hybrid car or throwing that plastic bottle from lunch into the recycling bin… but surprisingly, there a LOT more ways that we can all be green. Did you know that you can:

Green Your Work
Green Your Car
Green Your Coffee and Tea
Green Your Lighting
Green Your Heating
Green Your Dishwasher
Green Your Cleaning
Green Your Recycling
Green Your Electricity
Green Your Water
Green Your Energy Consumption
Green Your Events
Green Your Pets?

Who would have ever thought that you could green your pets… I certainly didn’t. I can’t say that I’m very green right now, there are still so many things in my life that I could change or do that would be much more environmental… but I don’t mind. It’s fun and part of the challenge to see what I can do every day to make myself and my life a little bit more green… and it’s fun to read about new and exciting ways to be more green. It’s amazing some of the inventions and the ideas which have spawned because of our desire to be more green… And don’t ever think that one person can’t do enough to make our planet just a little bit more green. All great things begin with simple ideas and the will to make it happen.

So, what are some of the ways to make yourself more green? These are some of the top 10 ways I’ve found on the internet. Maybe, one of these days, I’ll come up with some other ones on my own, or maybe you have some of your own that you want to share with me and anybody willing to listen… there’s no right or wrong way to live more green. And there is certainly no limit to what we can do as individuals to live more green and to encourage others to live more green.

1. turn it off, baby! (you’d be amazed at how much money you’d save if you just turned off that light in the bathroom, or unplugged that extra TV that has been just sitting there, or maybe turning up the AC a notch so that it’s not blasting Canadian weather into your living room.

2. Water is life, so stop wasting it! Washing laundry with hot water actually wastes a ton of water for no reason. I don’t really think your clothes will care if they are just a few centigrades colder. And you actually scrub yourself down cleaner when the water isn’t running during the shower. Rinse it all off at the end.

3. Look at the pretty florescent lights….replace those feverish incandescent bulbs with chill, cooler flouorescent ones… unless of course, you are a chicken farmer and you raise lots of baby chickens… then you can keep the warm, energy producing, money wasting incandescent bulbs…

4. less packaging…. You know you’re just going to throw away that extra box, or plastic bag, so just don’t waste money on it in the first place. Go for the things that have refills or just have less packaging from the start.

5. Eat and drink as local as possible.

6. Take a walk. Go for a bike ride. Hop on the subway. Ride the bus. Ie. Stop driving so much. You waste natural resources, you spend tons of money, you add to the pollution in the environment and you just may miss out on an opportunity to meet somebody really cool while you’re using public transportation. I know I’ve met many interesting people while taking buses and trains. It’s not always about the destination, but about the journey to get there.

7. Plant a tree, start a garden. You would be surprised how happy it makes you to have a little bit of green in your life. No space? Plant an herb garden… Don’t cook? Plant some citronella trees to keep away the mosquitos. No green thumb. Make your roommates do it. ☺

8. Recycle more. There is no reason NOT to recycle. Did you know that plastic bottles can be made into clothing? So, that new jacket of yours? Probably yesterday’s water bottle.

9. Spread the word. Living by example is definitely a great way to encourage others to live more green, but no harm in being a blabbermouth every now and then and encouraging your friends and neighbors to live a little bit more green. Maybe y’all can do something together or come up with another project. I know somebody who built his entire beach house out of other people’s “trash” and driftwood. It’s a cool house.

10. Don’t give up on Mother Earth. She’s been good to us so far… it’s time we treat her right, don’t ya think?
